Interstate 95

I-95 was built in Rhode Island in the 1960s after President Eisenhower signed the Highway Revenue Act of 1956 creating the Interstate Highway System. They decided to run I-95 through Smith Hill because they knew there would be little resistance from the minority community that lived in the area.

There are 42.36 miles of highway and 29 exits in Rhode Island alone. Every 10 miles there is a one mile straight-away so that in case of an emergency a plane would be able to land. The interstate helped people to commute to the suburbs. People started moving out of the city and a new group of people populated the area.
